Researchers Discover Intriguing Gold Ring and Enigmatic Glass Amulet Among 30,000 Artifacts, Shedding Light on Medieval Kalmar
A total of 30,000 objects were uncovered, which is rare in a city excavation, resulting in quite significant findings. As the excavation neared completion, two extraordinary items were discovered, standing out from the rest: a gold ring and a particularly distinctive “alsen gem”.
This item is believed to date back to the early 15th century and was most likely worn by a woman.

Nearly all the farms were ravaged by the Danish invasion, as indicated by the presence of fire scars and ruined structures.
The excavations provided a thorough glimpse into medieval Kalmar, revealing a array of remains including abandoned buildings, hidden cellars, paved streets, sewage systems, and other ordinary items.
The discoveries also included fragments of a runestone that may have originated from a tombstone in a cemetery in Kalmar, as well as a brick bearing an impression of a cat’s paw. “We gain a glimpse into significant aspects of the medieval city and come across remnants that reveal the social and economic circumstances of diverse groups, including merchants, artisans, civil servants, clergy, the poor, and the wealthy,” StibĂ©us explained in a description of the research conducted in medieval Kalmar.
