Walmart CEO delivers alarming news for Amazon

One of the biggest differences between how we live our lives today compared to a decade or so ago is our shopping habits.

Back in the early 2000s, people typically went to the mall to buy jeans and sneakers, to the grocery store for their weekly groceries, and to big box stores for items like furniture and electronics.

Today, it’s become more common for people to bypass lines and traffic by ordering most of their goods online.

Companies have shouldered the logistical and financial responsibilities to make online shopping convenient.

Amazon was a pioneer in offering free and quick shipping and returns as a benefit to its annual membership program.

Even today, more than 200 Prime members have access to millions of products that can be delivered to their doorsteps within two days, and many orders arrive on the very same day.

Walmart makes strides

Walmart has been closing in on Amazon’s lead.

The largest retailer rolled out its Walmart+ service in 2020, as many people stayed home during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and increasingly turned to online shopping for most of their needs.

Walmart has been working hard to compete with Amazon’s popular Prime service, but the company remains tight-lipped about the actual number of subscribers to its own membership program.

Walmart+ subscribers get perks such as special discounts, hassle-free returns, and complimentary and expedited shipping.

Walmart’s CEO is offering a benefit to its employees that is similar to a major perk offered by Amazon.

Now, Walmart claims to have achieved something that Amazon is also targeting.

During Walmart’s quarterly earnings call for the fourth quarter of 2025, company leaders stated that 93% of American households now have access to same-day shipping – a feature Amazon has been actively developing and highlighting in recent years.

Notably, Walmart has significantly increased its fast delivery services. There was a remarkable 180% surge in deliveries completed within a three-hour timeframe, demonstrating a substantial demand for quick service.

We’re enhancing our capabilities to better meet customers’ needs as they arise,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon stated. “This is what’s fueling our expansion. Our prices remain competitive and we’re increasing convenience.

Thanks to these advancements in convenience, Walmart’s membership is on the rise. The company has witnessed a 16% growth in membership income compared to the previous year, with a 4% increase in overall net sales.

Amazon claimed in April that 60% of its orders are placed with the option for same-day or next-day delivery, suggesting that consumers prioritize speed and convenience above all else.
