Canada Lawmaker Suggests Letting 3 US States Join, Get Free Health Care

Canadian Green Party leader Elizabeth May proposed that California, Oregon, and Washington become part of Canada as provinces, granting them universal healthcare and stricter gun control laws.

It would be beneficial to the U.S. if Canada were to join the United States as our 51st state.

Trump’s transition team and May’s office have been contacted via email for a comment.

Why It Matters

by Canadians.

This move could potentially put a strain on the relationship between the two nations.

What To Know

Speaking at a press conference last week in Ottawa, May said bluntly, “Hey, President-elect Trump, do you think we’re up for possibly becoming the 51st US state? I’d like to suggest an alternative: California might be more interested in becoming the 11th province of Canada.”

It’s being held back due to the strong influence of the national gun lobby. Our government has already implemented quite stringent firearms regulations.

Because Canada couldn’t “make ends meet” due to relying on US financial support.

What People Are Saying

The statements made by President-elect Trump demonstrate a clear misunderstanding of what makes Canada a powerful nation. Our economy is robust, our people are resilient, and we will not hesitate to stand firm against any threats to our country.

To the President, I say, I’ll make him a counteroffer: how about we propose a deal where we buy Alaska, along with Minnesota and Minneapolis at no extra cost.

What Happens Next

The incoming U.S. president’s increasingly harsh language may indicate a deterioration in US-Canada relations, with his proposal to impose tariffs on all imported goods from other countries expected to have a significant impact on international trade.
