Before the introduction of the Hvid, the largest diesels were enormous, rendering them completely immovable.

The Cummins Hvid engine weighs approximately 1,100 pounds, which may not suggest portability. Yet, the conventional diesel engines at that time necessitated extra components like a large air compressor to distribute fuel, resulting in heaviness. On the other hand, the Hvid adopted an innovative injection technology, eliminating the cumbersome systems found on other diesels, and thereby becoming transportable for use in various settings such as a farm, sawmill, or factory.

Instead of relying on heavy-duty air compressor attachments to aid combustion, the Cummins Hvid makes use only of the heat and compressed air produced within the cylinder itself to initiate ignition. A tiny receptacle adjacent to the combustion chamber mixes fuel with heated air aspirated during the compression stroke, prompting the blended substance to produce a self-contained explosion that projects its contents into the combustion chamber and propels piston movement. The outcome was approximately 60 pounds-feet of torque and roughly six horsepower.

The Hvid could run on various types of fuel, but a few adjustments were necessary.

According to Cummins, the Hvid’s significant benefit resided in its capacity to operate on a variety of fuels, including vegetable-based oils, diesel, and even kerosene. Nonetheless, maintaining or even starting the engine was not always straightforward, especially for those without prior experience. A conventional ignition system not being part of the design, timing the hand crank with the compression release lever proved to be a challenging process for engine synchronization.
