What Is The Universe Expanding Into If It’s Already Infinite?

When you bake a loaf of bread or a batch of muffins, you position the dough inside a pan. As the dough is being heated in the oven, it increases in size and fills the baking pan. Any chocolate chips or blueberries in the muffin batter find themselves spreading further apart as the muffin batter expands.

The expansion of the universe is often compared to a piece of dough being placed in a baking pan and expanding outward. However, this analogy has a flaw – while dough expands into the confines of its container, the universe is expanding within its own boundaries, not into something else.

It can seem like a brain twister, but everything within the universe is part of the universe itself. In an ever-growing universe, there’s no container or edges; it’s more like a huge, undivided expanse. If we were to imagine a boundary, that boundary would itself be part of the universe and would expand along with its growth.

It requires extensive knowledge to understand these theories, and since they’re rooted in concepts beyond our everyday reality, it’s a bit analogous to asking what is more north than the North Pole; it’s a unique and difficult-to-conceive situation.

A different way to understand the cosmos’s growth is to observe how other galaxies are receding from our own, the Milky Way. By tracking how other galaxies move away from ours, scientists have discovered that the universe is expanding. They define this expansion as the rate at which other galaxies move away from us, allowing them to conceptualize it without picturing something for it to expand into.

Since the name implies it, it was a period when the universe underwent a time of swift expansion.
