Russians Mourn Two Elite Colonels Killed in Storm Shadow strike on army HQ

It has been reported that two Russian officers lost their lives in a Ukranian attack at an army headquarters in the Kursk region using a Storm Shadow missile.

According to Russian Telegram channels, the two lieutenant colonels lost their lives on December 30 following a Ukrainian attack on a bunker in Lgov.

A video posted on the Russia No Context Telegram channel supposedly showcased the aftermath of an incident, with intense flames visible and a voice saying, “the men are all in the bunker, there are many people there.”

The death of Tereshchenko, head of communications for the 76th Airborne Division, has been confirmed by the Officers’ Hockey League on the Telegram channel.

A recent obituary aired on the channel reported that Tereshchenko, who had been fighting in the war since at least October 2022, was among the victims who lost their lives in a missile attack that resulted in the loss of eight officers and injured 22 other service personnel.

A funeral was announced to take place on January 5, noting that “his path, marked by bravery, fearlessness, and heroism, was tragically cut short” and that “words are ultimately ineffective.”

Confirmation of Maletsky’s passing was posted on the social network VKontakte where one of the memorial contributions described him as “my close friend and comrade.”

Ukrainian forces, armed with missiles supplied by the West, carried out a strike on a Russian military command center in Belaya. Ukrainian officials, however, have not disclosed any information on casualties resulting from the attack.

Ukrainian forces claimed to have used a HIMARS to hit a command post of the 810th Naval Infantry Brigade near Lgov, Kursk Oblast, on December 25, resulting in the death of the deputy commander and several other staff personnel there.

Russia’s Officers’ Ice Hockey League Telegram channel reported, “We regret to inform you that Guards Lieutenant Colonel of the Airborne Forces, Communications Chief of the 76th Pskov Airborne Division, and player of the OKO hockey club Valery Borisovich Tereshchenko has passed away while on active duty.”

A tribute on VKontakte to Pavel Maletsky said: “There is devastating news … my close friend and comrade, may you rest in eternal memory.”

What happens next

Over the weekend, Ukraine had to relinquish control of territory it initially seized on August 6 following a series of setbacks, and Ukrainian forces may employ western-provided weapons for further strikes in the coming weeks.

Moscow insisted Tuesday that Russian forces have also reclaimed territory in the region. The city of Kursk will remain a crucial factor in Ukraine’s position for future peace talks with Russian leaders.
