Ihnat reported on comments made by the pilot in a conversation with him, noting that intercepting such critical targets is a challenging task for any pilot, yet who better suited to this kind of combat work with cruise missiles than Ukrainian pilots, who have more experience with it globally.

‘The mission computer led me to detect and track eight hostile cruise missiles on their course.

‘I see the obstacles ahead and in response fire back the air-to-air missiles with direct hits, and they explode audibly.’

Four missiles were fired in conjunction with the jet’s machine gun in order to accomplish this extraordinary task.

“The process of shooting down cruise missiles with a cannon is extremely hazardous due to the target’s high speed and the potential for an explosive detonation upon impact,” the pilot stated.

But I followed the methods that the instructors in the United States had taught me, and I was able to hit them.

‘Two missiles happened to be flying close to each other when they were both struck down simultaneously.’

Ihnat stated that upon completing the mission successfully, the pilot received a warm and appreciative reception at the airfield, marked by applause from those who had gathered.

The first American-made F-16 fighter jets arrived in Ukraine in August 2024, marking a significant turning point in the conflict.
