As Trump eyes Greenland, Danish king makes it bigger on his coat of arms

Denmark’s king has unveiled a new royal crest that prominently displays Greenland, just as President-elect Donald Trump is once again suggesting the US purchase the Danish territory, a proposition that strained relations between the US and Denmark during his first term as president.

Created in June 1972, this prerogative gets rid of the Commonwealth’s recently gained prominence in the royal coat of arms.

The bottom left section of Sweden’s coat of arms previously included three crowns symbolizing the union with Norway and Denmark, as well as icons representing the two parts of Denmark’s colonies: a polar bear for Greenland and an ibex for the Faroe Islands. In the updated design, the crowns have been taken out, and the polar bear and ibex now occupy separate sections.

The king’s decision reflects a continuation of the Danish royal family’s well-established role within the Commonwealth, said Mikkel Runge Olesen, a senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies. Historically, Danish royals have served as a central unifying force for the kingdom, Olesen noted.

In what the individual described as a “very long personal day trip.”

On Monday on Truth Social, he announced that his son and several representatives would visit Greenland’s most breathtaking locations and attractions.

“Greenland is a truly remarkable place, and it would greatly benefit its people if it were to become part of our country,” Trump said. “We will safeguard it, and treasure it, from the stresses and dangers of the outside world.”

The United States views this territory as a crucial strategic location, especially given the growing competition with China and Russia in the Arctic region.

“For reasons of global security and liberty, it is the firm conviction of the United States of America that control and possession of Greenland are utterly indispensable.”

Everyone moved on, but Greenland’s sovereignty remains a sensitive issue.

In the best interests of the country, a proposed agreement would bring about a free association between the United States and Greenland, while still recognizing full Danish authority over the territory.

Though comments about this idea have come from former administration officials and not directly from Trump himself, it’s not clear if this plan aligns with his current views, according to Olesen.

The Trump campaign didn’t have an immediate response to a request for comment made on Tuesday.

Denmark’s Defense Minister recently unveiled a major defense spending package for Greenland, totaling a significant sum of approximately $1.5 billion.

We as a whole are united, each of us committed to the Kingdom of Denmark,” he said. “Starting from the Danish minority in Southern Schleswig, which lies even outside the kingdom, and all the way to Greenland. We are connected as one entity.
