Spencer Jones Declares Himself A Fan Of The ‘Torpedo’ Bat

The torpedo revolution is taking over MLB.

In recent weeks, the New York Yankees have popularized this type of bat, with the barrel placed where most hitters make the hardest contact when they swing as opposed to the top of it.

Austin Wells, Anthony Volpe, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Cody Bellinger, among other Yankees, enjoyed a scintillating start of the season while using the bat.

They didn’t invent it, though: other players around the league have been using it, too.

Yankees top prospect Spencer Jones has declared himself a huge fan of the bat, and says he will be using it.

“They showed me where my barrel was was like 20th percentile of barrel size of bats. It’s like, why am I using a bat with a tiny barrel when I could maximize it?”
Jones told the New York Post
. “It’s like it’s obvious for me to use a bigger barrel.”

For a guy like Jones, the ‘torpedo bat’ is not only an option: it’s the most suitable bat choice.

He has huge swing-and-miss tendencies, so a bigger barrel will help him make more contact.

It’s as simple as understanding basic physics: a bigger barrel will cover more of the plate.

He still needs to take a step forward in the department because, in all likelihood, the 36.8 percent strikeout rate he had in Double-A last year is the stat keeping him from making the leap to Triple-A.

This bat should not only help Jones get to the majors faster, but it also has the potential to get him to reach his full potential as a 20-20 threat.
