Samsung to Beat Apple to Ultrathin Phone With New S25 Edge

(Samsumg.com) — Samsung is planning to introduce a super slim version of its Galaxy S25 smartphone later in the year, getting a head start on Apple in a growing market.

—the focus is primarily on artificial intelligence and not greatly on major hardware enhancements— the Edge model stands out for its very slender design.

Apple is expected to introduce a sleeker, thinner version of its iPhone later this year, representing one of the company’s most significant design shifts in recent years.

The move enhances a range of devices with a collection of innovative AI capabilities and voice commands. With the integration of Google Gemini, a cutting-edge Google AI platform, and its own device-based AI, Samsung has solidified its position at the forefront of mobile AI advancements.

According to Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, releasing new flagship smartphones has become a major challenge for top phone makers. Wood notes that top-of-the-line devices have reached such a high level of quality that it’s quite challenging for manufacturers to make them significantly different from one model to the next. Consequently, it’s not surprising that mobile manufacturers are relying on AI technology to grab consumers’ attention, but this approach isn’t having the desired impact.

The Edge will utilize some of the same technologies as the Ultra, tightly packed into a more compact design. Customers are looking for “the best performance, the best camera features, the best AI,” Roh said, “but they also want an even slimmer and more distinctive form factor that sets it apart from the competition.”

“We’ve tried to pack all the benefits of the S25 Ultra into a slim and compact design,” the official explained.

The new iPhone is thinner than any previous model in the device’s history.

Roh stated that Samsung selected the Edge name for this new model, drawing inspiration from its sleek design as well as its use of advanced, forward-thinking technology. Additionally, the brand has experience with this moniker, having previously used it for phones featuring cutting-edge curved displays many years earlier.

Roh stated the company has “high expectations for this product.” As for pricing, Samsung has not yet determined it, but confirmed it will be lower than the Ultra model, which starts at $1,299.

“We aim to set the price of this product below the Ultra models, making it more affordable and attracting a wider customer base,” Roh said.
